Preparing for your Expedition

  • Stay Active

Sometimes in the field we may need to hike with our gear to see bears. Terrain we may experience during BEAR Expeditions includes but not limited to beaches, shallow ocean water, streams, mudflats, tall grass, hills, getting on and off a skiff, and rock outcroppings. We recommend doing frequent walks or hikes, and be prepared to walk with your own gear.

  • Gear Check

Make a checklist for the gear you are bringing and make sure that it is working and in good shape prior to coming out.

If you are renting gear (i.e. camera lenses or equipment), be sure that it arrives to you a few days in advance to your departure. Double check and record its quality before departing on your expedition.

  • Insurance

While optional, we recommend purchasing trip insurance and/or insurance or any valuable gear you are taking with you. Weather can impact travel to and from Kodiak.

We recommend purchasing insurance for camera gear in case something happens in the field. This can help you save a lot of money if your camera accidentally falls in the ocean during a skiff ride or has water damage from rain.

  • Communication

We will be off-grid and have no access to proper wifi or cellular services. Be sure to set communication affairs in order. We have a satellite phone capabilities which cost extra for non-emergency communications.

  • Make Apps Offline

If you use post production apps like Adobe suite’s Photoshop and Lightroom, be sure that your applications are set for offline use. Click here for instructions and to learn more

  • Documents, Policies, Safety

Be sure that you have submitted your Guest Form, COVID safety sheet, signed Liability waiver, and if applicable doctor’s notes to BEAR Expeditions. Read our terms and conditions and privacy policies

Emails will be sent out regarding any missing information, documents, and other items to prepare if needed.
